FOLIO Project Update – Week of February 17, 2020

The FOLIO Technical Council reviewed the Okapi-RMB release plans and roadmap and discussed the process that should be used to plan and communicate that roadmap. TC also discussed status on other conversations that are in flight. Full status can be found here: https://wiki.folio.org/display/TC/2020-02-19+Meeting+notes

The ERM Subgroup of the Resource Management SIG discussed license mapping and searching and identifying licenses by their terms. The Cross-App group and main ERM group did not meet due to absences and scheduling conflicts.

The Metadata Management SIG reviewed and approved some proposed changes to the instance status updated date that will align with changes to the item status updated date, and approved making the Instance element “cataloged date” editable within Inventory. The SIG is planning a virtual “edit-a-thon” for MM-related apps and topics in the tips and tricks section of the wiki.

The Reporting SIG offered a FOLIO Forum on the Library Data Platform on 2/12/20 with 250 registrants, and the recording is now available on the Open Library Foundation YouTube channel at FOLIO Forum: FOLIO Reporting with the Library Data Platform. The Reporting SIG is using small functional-area-focused working groups for the development of report prototypes and queries. Status updates on progress are given by each subgroup at Reporting SIG meetings. Each subgroup started their meetings this week and reviewed the work to be done in their areas.

The Sys Ops & Mgt SIG finalized discussions about the architectural diagram, which is one SIG charge to be presented to the community. There is a draft for that diagram that explains the basic concepts of the FOLIO architecture. Ingolf will work on that diagram and upload it to the FOLIO wiki. In addition, the basic concepts used for FOLIO deployment will be explained in notes to that diagram. Among those are containerization, orchestration, clustering, the microservice architecture, load balancing and “casting” between instances. There is a draft for these notes here: https://wiki.folio.org/display/SYSOPS/Notes+for+Conceptual+Architectural+Diagram

In parallel, Jason and Wayne are working on an architectural diagram for deployment with Kubernetes and Rancher. Next week we will learn about PubSub integration.

A Support SIG has formed and will take one charge away from SysOps SIG.

The recording from this week’s FOLIO Forum from the Forum Facilitators SIG on the Roadmap Update and Perpetua Demonstration is now available (https://youtu.be/WRDLAMc8IAw). The next Forum is on the Open Library Foundation on March 4, and registration is available (https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_DQT_ONoFSeO6RyD2BpFuBA). The FOLIO Forum after that will be on April 1 with a panel of early FOLIO implementors (registration details to follow).
